“A Day of Washing, Churning, & Learning” Presented by Oaklands Historic House Museum in Sept & May
MURFREESBORO, Tenn. - Students grades K-6 will experience the chores of the mid-1800’s through period crafts, demonstrations, games and hands-on activities as well as visit the Historic House Museum. “A Day of Washing, Churning, and Learning” is in September and May, from 9:00 a.m. until 1:00 p.m. at the historic site, located at 900 North Maney Avenue in Murfreesboro.
This event will focus on chores of the mid-1800’s through hands-on activities for students such as candle making, clothes washing, butter churning, quill writing, and rug beating. Living history demonstrators and artisans such as beekeepers, blacksmiths, tatters, and brick makers will be on the grounds. Other activities scheduled for the event are: tours of the mansion, scavenger hunt of the exterior of the house, and planting herbs. Crafts and games for the children such as: sack races, hoops-n-sticks, graces, bucket relays, making yarn dolls and pew babies, and 1860’s dress up will be available. Murfreesboro Parks and Recreation will provide a wetlands education activity.
Students will enjoy presentations by the local Sons of Confederate Veterans Camp #33 about the chores of soldiers in camp during the Civil War and a special activity sponsored by the Garden Lovers Garden Club.
“It gives us great pleasure to share the house museum and grounds with the students in our county and surrounding counties. There are so many new members of our community that have not experienced our rich civil war history,” states Oaklands educational director, Mary Beth Nevills. Teachers and parents can look forward to this event in the next school year on September, and again in May. Reservations are already being accepted.
“A Day of Washing, Churning, and Learning” is sponsored Oaklands Historic House Museum and Wilson Bank and Trust. Admission is $5.00 for students.
