ANTEBELLUM ACADEMY

The passing of time has altered lifestyles and landscapes, but young ladies can still take a glimpse of a time gone by at Oaklands Antebellum Academy. Young ladies ages 13 and up can learn the ways of a true southern belle in July at Oaklands Historic House Museum. The weeklong etiquette school seeks to preserve and instill the manners and niceties from the genteel part of Southern history.

The girls will enjoy classes in etiquette, dance, penmanship, music, art and needlework. Classes will take place in Oaklands mansion with everyone in period dress. Each girl will be expected to dress in period attire for the week of school.

"It is amazing how many modern teenage girls have a yearning for life in the early 1860's," said Mary Beth Nevills, educational director of Oaklands. "We look forward to engaging the young ladies of the community in classes and activities that will promote their understanding and appreciation of being a proper young Southern lady."
